During our trip through Sardinia, we encountered a few challenges. While travelling here is generally straightforward, we did come across some useful facts that can help make your journey smoother. We hope these tips will guide you on your adventure as well!
Seasons & Weather
The best time to visit Sardinia with a camper van is during spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October). The weather’s perfect—mild temps, fewer crowds, and the freedom to explore! Summer can get hot and crowded, especially along the coast, while winter is quieter and more affordable, though a bit chillier and higher chances for bad weather. Spring and autumn offer the perfect mix for scenic drives and outdoor fun!
We visited Sardinia in mid-January, on our way to Greece. With hardly any other camper vans around, we had plenty of peaceful parking spots to ourselves. But, oh boy, the weather was unpredictable—lots of wind, rain, and even a little snow!
In winter, many shops and campsites in Sardinia take a little break, especially in the more touristy spots. But don’t worry—bigger towns like Cagliari and Olbia stay buzzing year-round, with shops, restaurants, and services staying open as usual. Some campsites hibernate for the winter season, but others are open with fewer crowds and a more relaxed vibe. Just check ahead if you’re planning a cosy winter getaway!
Roads
Sardinia has a well-maintained road network, making it easy to explore by camper van. A drive from the northern tip of Sardinia to the southern tip is about 280 to 300 kilometres (174 to 186 miles), depending on your route. The journey typically takes 4 to 5 hours. Major highways are in good condition, while scenic coastal and mountain roads offer stunning views. While the roads are generally accessible, some smaller routes can be narrow or winding, especially in rural areas.
Camping
Free camping in Sardinia isn’t usually allowed, especially on protected beaches or private property. But don’t worry—wild camping in more remote, non-restricted areas is sometimes tolerated, as long as you’re respectful of nature and follow the rules. The good news? There are plenty of official free spots, often with handy service options. Plus, you can park for a small fee in many other places. Perfect for budget-savvy van travellers! Connectivity
Phone reception in Sardinia is pretty solid, especially in towns and along main roads. In the more remote spots, you might lose a bit of signal, but don’t worry—you’ll still find decent coverage in most places. Wi-Fi is also easy to come by! Many campsites and cafes offer free internet, though speeds can be hit or miss. If you’re heading to the countryside, double-check your roaming options for seamless connectivity!

Sassari
Sassari, located northwest of Sardinia, is brimming with culture, nature, and charm. The city itself, the second-largest on the island, has much to offer: the beautiful Duomo di San Nicola, historical city walls, and cozy squares.
Just a 40-minute drive away is the Cascata di Triulintas, a small waterfall near Martis. This hidden gem, surrounded by greenery, is at its best in the spring—perfect for a relaxing picnic or a photo opportunity.
Not far from here is Porto Torres, once the first Roman colony of Sardinia. From this port city, ferries depart, including to the island of Asinara, which features a national park with pristine nature and wild donkeys. You can be immersed in this unique landscape in just over an hour.
The region offers camper spots for every preference. For simplicity, there are basic spots like Sosa Camper Sedini. Looking for a little more comfort? Area Camper Maragnani is a good choice, with additional amenities. Want luxury and convenience? Large campsites like Camping International provide everything you need, including a restaurant, pool, and plenty of facilities. This campsite is also close to the coast and offers several hiking trails in the area—perfect for a relaxing family vacation!
The region also boasts stunning beaches and delicious restaurants like Lido Bar and Ballarini Bar Focacceria Griglieria. In short, a perfect mix of nature, history, and gastronomy!
Oristano
Oristano, located on the west coast of Sardinia, offers a wonderfully varied landscape: from beaches and dunes to mountains. It is known for its peaceful atmosphere and unspoiled nature.
The province has some of Sardinia’s most beautiful beaches, such as Spiaggia di Is Arutas, Spiaggia di San Giovanni di Sinis, and Torregrande. Stagno di Cabras, a nature reserve, is a haven for birds, including flamingos. The region also has other marshlands teeming with biodiversity. For adventurous hikers, the Istrampu de Capu Nieddu trail is highly recommended, with spectacular waterfalls, especially after rainfall.
One of the highlights of the province is the Oristano Carnival (Sa Sartiglia), a traditional event held in February or March, where horseback riders try to hit a silver star. The carnival attracts many visitors each year.
If you’re looking for a nice place to stay, Consorzio Pontis is a great choice, where you can stay by paying for a meal while enjoying a traditional fish restaurant. The Fordongianus camper spot is also ideal, with thermal baths within walking distance. Here, you can swim in the ancient Roman baths.
For an affordable meal, Bar Ristorante Frida in Oristano is a cozy option. Oristano has everything for nature lovers, culture seekers, and foodies!
Medio Campidano
Although Medio Campidano is a smaller province, it is a hidden gem! Located in the southwest of Sardinia, this region is home to the impressive Grotte di Su Mannau, a network of limestone caves, as well as the beautiful Parco del Marganai. This nature park offers a varied landscape of forests, cliffs, and breathtaking views, perfect for hikers and nature lovers. While exploring the park, you can encounter wild boars, red deer, and mouflons, and it is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with vultures, eagles, and hawks soaring through the skies.
The picturesque town of Sanluri, one of the larger villages in the province, has a rich history and is famous for the Castello di Sanluri, a medieval castle. Around the village, you’ll find free camper spots, such as in Genuri and Baradili, ideal for a peaceful overnight stay. For a unique experience, you can also stay on a farm or vineyard, like at Cantina Su’entu, where you can enjoy local wines, delicious food, and a warm atmosphere. What more could you want?
Carbonia-Iglesias
We spent most of our time in this province, and for good reason! It’s a fascinating place full of history and natural beauty that’s sure to amaze you. A must-visit is Porto Flavia, a former mining port built in the 1920s. With its impressive architecture and breathtaking location, this unique site was designed to make the export of minerals like lead and zinc more efficient. During a guided tour, you can explore the tunnels and learn about their mining history. For an even deeper dive into the past, visit the Parco Geominerario Storico e Ambientale della Sardegna, where you’ll discover how miners lived and worked in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Nature enthusiasts will love the Monte Linas mountain range, where hiking trails lead you through picturesque landscapes and even past a stunning waterfall. If you’re up for an island adventure, head to San Pietro, a charming island accessible by ferry from Portovesme or Calasetta. The trip takes just 45 minutes and costs between €5 and €8 per person, depending on the season.
Just 25 minutes from Porto Flavia, you’ll find a great camper spot by the coast: Strada Comunale Plage Mesu. For a small fee, you can stay overnight right by the beach. Prefer something more luxurious? Munai Agriglamping offers comfortable accommodations, a delicious breakfast with local products, and a bike path leading to Sant’Antioco. Whatever you choose, this region has everything for an unforgettable stay!
Cagliari
The province of Cagliari, located in the south of Sardinia, is full of surprises and charm! The capital, Cagliari, is a vibrant city brimming with history, culture, and beautiful beaches. From the island’s largest port, ferries depart to Italy and other Sardinian destinations. We took the ferry from here to Greece. Cagliari itself offers plenty of dining and drinking spots – Tribune Bistrot and Sardinia Experience 99 are definitely our favourites!
For adventure seekers, Parco Avventura Pula is the perfect place to climb through the treetops. You’ll also find an eco-friendly campsite with all the amenities, ideal for a relaxing stay under the pine trees. And just a short walk from the beach, there are plenty of beach clubs to spend the day at.
A must-see in the region is the Nora Archaeological Park. This open-air museum takes you through the ruins of an ancient city, founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC and later expanded by the Romans. Among the remnants of houses, temples, streets, and a theatre, you’ll feel transported back in time!
Ogliastra
Ogliastra, located on the eastern coast of Sardinia, is a hidden gem full of untouched nature and breathtaking mountain landscapes. The region offers the perfect mix of beautiful beaches like Cala Luna and Cala Sisine, and adventurous hiking trails through the impressive Gennargentu mountains.
For a fun and budget-friendly experience, you can explore the Grotte di Su Marmuri, a spectacular cave near Ulassai, or enjoy the panoramic views from Torre di Bari. In the heart of the mountains lies the cozy Camping Theleme, where you can start various hiking and biking routes. Be sure to stop by the charming mountain villages of Arzana and Tortolì. In Tortolì, you can park for free at Tortolì 55a Via Sulcis and take a stroll around the town. For a tasty break, Bonobo in the centre is a must-visit!
Ogliastra is the ultimate destination for nature lovers and hikers looking for tranquillity, adventure, and a touch of local charm!
Nuoro
Nuoro, located in the inland of Sardinia, is a province full of nature, mountains, and authentic mountain villages. The Gennargentu mountain range offers spectacular hiking trails and panoramic views, perfect for nature lovers and hikers. Su Gologone, a famous spring, is a must-see for anyone visiting the region.
In Nuoro city, you can visit the Museo della Vita e delle Tradizioni Popolari Sarde to learn more about the rich Sardinian culture and history. Nearby is the picturesque village of Orgosolo, famous for its murals depicting local life and history. Here you’ll also find a great private camper spot, Orgosolo SP48, where you can stay, enjoy a meal, and use the showers at the hotel pool.
For a bit of adventure, head to the top of Monte Ortobene for a breathtaking view of the island. It’s the perfect place to enjoy peace and nature!
And if you’re into exploration, the Gorropu Canyon is a must-see. This impressive gorge is considered one of the deepest in Europe. Hiking, climbing, canyoning, and mountain biking are all great ways to explore the canyon. Nearby, you can stay at farms like Agriturismo Guthiddai, where you can enjoy not only nature but also a delicious traditional meal at a great price!
Olbia-Tempio
Olbia-Tempio, a province in the northeast of Sardinia, boasts a breathtaking coastline, picturesque towns, and a rich history. The capital, Olbia, is a lively port city that serves as the gateway to the island, with a charming mix of old and new.
The province is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia. Along the famous Costa Smeralda, you’ll find Spiaggia del Principe and Liscia Ruja, with their turquoise waters and soft, white sand. Cala Brandinchi, also known as “Little Tahiti,” has crystal-clear water and idyllic white beaches. The peaceful Spiaggia di San Teodoro and the long La Cinta beach near San Teodoro are perfect for a family day out.
Additionally, there’s the Area Marina Protetta di Tavolara Punta Coda Cavallo, a protected marine area where you can dive into crystal-clear waters and explore the underwater world, from colourful fish to impressive rock formations.
